Systems Engineering for Energy Systems (Mech 498/499)

Systems engineering is a term with a variety of connotations and long history, but typically involving notions of robust design of a complete system throughout its life cycle, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary contributions and tacking very complex systems. Energy systems issues are often recognized as requiring a systems approach to their solution, including both technical, economic, societal and political considerations.

The goal of this project is to research the current state-of-the-art in systems engineering methods and approaches in a general sense, and identify promising tools that might be usefully applied to the study of energy systems. In particular, the complexity, scale and multi-faceted nature of energy systems stand to benefit from the application of systems engineering techniques to their potential solutions.
